Position Summary
We are seeking an entry level Accident Investigator/Reconstructionist to support forensic investigations of motor vehicle losses and related incidents. This entry-level consulting role focuses on evidence documentation, basic analytical tasks, report preparation, and exhibit development under the direction of senior reconstructionists and engineers. The ideal candidate is technically curious, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in both field and office environments.

Key Responsibilities
-
Assist with scene investigations: measurements, photography, sketching/diagramming, evidence identification, and documentation.
-
Support vehicle inspections at tow yards/repair facilities: damage documentation, VIN verification, component observations, and photograph logs.

Collect and organize case materials (police reports, statements, repair estimates, medical summaries when relevant, photos, video).

Perform foundational reconstruction analyses under supervision, such as:
-
Speed estimates from skid/yaw evidence (where appropriate)
-
Basic time-distance and stopping-distance analyses
-
Visibility/line-of-sight checks and roadway geometry documentation
-

Prepare scene diagrams, scaled drawings, and demonstratives (2D/3D).

Assist with downloading, organizing, and interpreting vehicle data sources as assigned (e.g., EDR/telematics/video), following established protocols.

Maintain clear file structure, documentation logs, and chain-of-custody practices for physical/digital evidence.

Draft sections of technical reports (methods, observations, assumptions, limitations) and incorporate senior reviewer feedback.

Communicate professionally with claims professionals, attorneys, and vendors (tow yards, repair facilities) to coordinate access and gather information.

Follow field safety procedures and assist with traffic control planning when required.
Qualifications

Required:
-
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or a closely related technical field; or equivalent technical/field investigation experience.

Strong grasp of fundamental physics (kinematics, energy, friction) and comfort with technical calculations.

Proficiency with Excel and technical writing tools (Word, PDF markup).
-
Ability to produce clean, consistent photo logs and documentation.

Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel locally/regionally for inspections and scene work.
-
Ability to work outdoors in varied conditions and safely around traffic/active roadways.
-
Ability to lift/carry equipment (typically up to 25–40 lbs.), stand/walk for extended periods, and work in inclement weather as needed.

Ability to work early mornings/evenings depending on access to scenes/vehicles and client deadlines.

Preferred​:
-
Exposure to reconstruction tools (any of the following): PC-Crash, HVE, Virtual CRASH, FARO Zone, AutoCAD.
-
Familiarity with EDR workflows (e.g., Bosch CDR) or telematics/video evidence handling.
-
Relevant coursework/training: Northwestern University Center for Public Safety, IPTM, traffic crash investigation series.
