Position Summary
We are seeking a Civil Engineer – Property Specialist to support forensic evaluations of residential, commercial, and industrial properties in an insurance and litigation environment. This role focuses on investigating the cause, origin, and scope of property-related failures and damage (e.g., water intrusion, settlement, structural distress, storm impacts, construction defects) and translating technical findings into clear, defensible deliverables. The ideal candidate combines field competence with strong documentation and client-ready communication.

Key Responsibilities
-
Conduct site visits to inspect damaged properties and document conditions through photographs, measurements, notes, and sampling coordination (as applicable).

Evaluate building and site systems, including foundations, slabs, framing, exterior envelopes, drainage/grading, retaining walls, pavements, and site utilities (scope varies by assignment).

Identify likely damage mechanisms and contributing factors (e.g., differential settlement, expansive soils, hydrostatic pressure, poor drainage, wind uplift, hail impacts, construction/installation deficiencies).

Review and interpret available documentation such as as-builts, plans/specs, geotechnical reports, repair invoices, maintenance records, weather data, and prior inspection reports.

Perform engineering calculations and engineering judgment-based assessments related to:

Load paths and structural distress indicators (as applicable)

Settlement/deflection observations
-
Drainage flow paths and surface water impacts
-
Wind/hail or storm-related effects on site/structure interfaces

Develop repair recommendations and scopes of work when required, including prioritization of repairs and constructability considerations.

Prepare clear, defensible reports that address cause, contributing factors, observed conditions, methodology, limitations, and conclusions.

Support claims and legal teams with technical clarifications, document review, and expert support activities (deposition/trial support when qualified/required).

Maintain chain-of-custody and documentation standards for samples, field notes, and digital evidence.

Coordinate with contractors, adjusters, attorneys, and testing laboratories for access, data collection, and repair discussions.
Qualifications

Required:
-
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (or closely related discipline).

Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or ability to take FE exam; Professional Engineer (PE) license is a plus (or ability/timeline to obtain).

Experience performing field investigations or condition assessments in the built environment (consulting, construction, inspections, forensic work, or similar).

Working knowledge of building systems and civil/site concepts (grading, drainage, foundations, pavements).

Strong technical writing skills with ability to communicate findings.

Proficiency with standard office tools (Excel, Word, PDF markup) and basic diagramming/sketching.

Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to sites as needed.

Preferred:
-
Experience with storm damage assessments (wind, hail, flood), water intrusion diagnostics, and/or foundation movement evaluations.

Familiarity with relevant standards/codes and guidance (e.g., IBC/IRC fundamentals, ASCE 7 concepts, ASTM testing references).

Experience coordinating or interpreting laboratory/field testing (moisture testing, material sampling, soils testing, nondestructive evaluation).

Comfort providing deposition support or participating in joint inspections with opposing experts.
